Uke Hunt Podcast Review: viddyviddy

Whilst I’m getting up to date with the podcast, I almost forgot that viddyviddy did a review of it. She said some nice things and even managed to get my strange northern accent to form part of a drinking game. Click through for the full write-up but here’s a quote:

The Ukulele Hunt podcast’s main feature is a veritable buffet of ukulele-utilizing performers.  Classical, silly, pop, sad, saucy, there’s a tune for every genre and a few minutes to spare on this podcast for all of them  Host Bossarocker (ain’t lyin’) leads her listeners through a guided tour of ukulele-related music, pausing along the way to let people stretch their legs and take pictures at scenic parks.  And by “scenic parks” I mean “interviews with people who play the ukulele.”

Bossarocker Ain’t Lyin’ needs to be an album title.

Podcast Update

I thought it was about time I did a podcast update. I’m sure most of you follow the podcast via Ukulele Hunt or subscribe via iTunes. But just in case you don’t, you may believe that the last podcast was Uke Hunt Podcast #9 due to my blogging lapse which is simply not true! We’re up to #12 now, with #13 about to hit the interwebs very soon!

I’m not going to list all the artists like I normally do for individual podcast posts, but I will start doing that again from now on. Instead, I’ll run through some edited highlights.

Uke Hunt Podcast #10

Featuring an ace round-up of tunes, from some familiar names and some less so, including Uke’s Not Dead, David Leach, Craig Robertson, Lila Burns and Jane Cameron.

Uke Hunt Podcast #11

Emily Scott live in session

If, like me, you have some catching up to do but only have time to listen to one podcast, then this should definitely be it. Featuring a sublime live session from Edinburgh based Emily Scott, complete with string section, this is our best live session to date. You can also pick up a copy of Emily’s latest album, I Write Letters I Never Send.

There is also a fine selection of other tracks from the likes of Salwa Azar, Quince, Al Avant, Henry the Rabbit and Clarilele Mike.

Uke Hunt Podcast #12

The last podcast of 2011 is a Christmas special with plenty of non-Christmas music to boot. The opening track by Alfred Williams is a cracker and there’s plenty of other treats brought to you by Lloyd Gabriel, Shiny and the Spoon, Uke’s Not Dead with Helen Arney, Thomas Oliver Jones, Ballard C. Boyd and more besides.

Get Involved!

Keep sending us your tunes to play! You can email mp3s or share with us via Soundcloud. Please make sure your track has a sample rate of 44.1kHz otherwise we can’t play it. And do get in touch, let us know what you’re thinking and what you’d like to hear.

tUnE-yArDs, Deaf Institute, Manchester

Manchester welcomed tUnE-yArDs back with open arms on Monday. Last time she played here, it wasn’t very busy. This time, she was playing at the much bigger Deaf Institute and it was sold out. Her band has also expanded to a four-piece with the addition of two saxophone players, as heard on her recent second album w h o k i l l, who also play pots and pans. Oh and a baking tray.

She rocked it of course. As she built loops out of drums, percussion and vocal layers, some loop nerds stood nearby exclaimed, “She makes it look so easy!” And she did, before adding ukulele and more knock out vocals to the mix along with plenty of audience participation and chirpy banter in between songs.

There aren’t many performers like Merrill Garbus around right now, not just musically speaking, where she’s clearly in a league of her own but in terms of how open, expressive and honest she is as a performer. More powa to her.

Today is the Day!

The time has come to stop parping and finally let the world see what I’m up to. This website is now live! There’s still a few tweaks to be done here and there but let me know what you think or if you find anything that doesn’t work.

I owe a big thank you to Ed Brookes for supplying most of the images on the site and to Craig Robertson for tweaking them.

I’ll soon be adding tracks from my upcoming EP, which is scheduled for release at the end of July. In the meantime, I hope there’s enough here to keep you occupied (you can also check out the demos I post on this blog). If there’s something you want to see that isn’t here, let me know in the comments.

To celebrate, I’ve uploaded both of the recent Ukulele! radio shows that I did for Chorlton FM to Mixcloud. Mixcloud is a streaming platform for radio shows, podcasts and DJ mixes and is completely legal. This means I can leave them up indefinitely. Yay! You can also embed them in your own websites, should you want to. Enjoy.
