The Wonky EP: coming 1st June 2015!

It’s true – we finally recorded our debut EP! We did it in the stunning surroundings of St Mark’s church in Levenshulme and we were joined on drums by the amazing Phil Howley – read more about it and see the photos on our shiny new website.

It is currently being pressed and will be available to buy on CD and download from 1st June. We are doing a very limited run of the CD so if you want one, don’t hang about.

We are officially launching The Wonky EP on Saturday 6th June at the Klondyke in Levenshulme, Manchester. Phil Howley will be joining us once again on drums so it proves to be very special. Hope to see you there.

Levy Uke Up is a year old!

levy-uke-up-1st-birthday-cakeOn March 25th, Levy Uke Up will be a year old. Yesterday was Part One of our birthday celebrations. We had a fantastic workshop with Phil Doleman, beautiful handmade ukes by Robert Collins and news of a Grand Northern Ukulele Festival from Mary Agnes Krell. Oh and this amazing birthday cake made by Jane! Thanks to everyone involved.

Part Two of our birthday celebrations will be our regular Uke Up this Sunday 24th March, 7pm at the Blue Bell Inn, Barlow Road (note the new venue). We’ve even compiled a songbook of our greatest hits from the past year. These are songs that always go down well at Uke Ups and they’re all fairly easy to play. I’ve updated some of the arrangements and amended the lyrics for Sister Kate.

Levy Jamboree ~ The Second Coming

We had such a blast at the last Levy Jamboree that we’ve decided to do it all again on Friday 8th February at the Klondyke. If it goes anywhere near as well as the last one, we’re thinking about doing them every few months or so.

It’s a fresh new line-up, apart from t’ Llamas of course but we’ll be doing some brand new songs, and everyone on the bill is still from lovely Levenshulme.

Advance tickets are now on sale for £5 and are available to buy from Trove Foods, from Pod Deli or directly from me. Do buy them in advance if you can as it will be £6 on the door. All the money goes directly to the music makers and everyone who helps to put on the night.

Lou and the Llamas

The original Levenshulme supergroup, playing some brand new songs so don’t expect the same as last time. No, siree!

“Melodic folk/blues with a wry intelligence. Annoyingly catchy songs, too.“ -@essers

“Knee-trembling, witty, heart-warming songs.“ – @wombat37

Monkeys in Love

Original, best & only proponents of Yes Wave, Monkeys in Love could be described as a strange canned-cocktail of forgotten film soundtracks, junk shop glam, lead-footed library funk, early eighties British indie, sludge metal or maybe just a drunken, surly Stereolab.

Monkeys in Love will be filming their set for their forthcoming Owl With Hands video, ahead of their new album Will Pet & Cuddle You, out 28 Feb 2013.

Phil Davies and the ninjasmokebombs

Check out their Bandcamp page and you will find songs taking in cinematic space reggae, laidback funk, jangly guitars, melodic, rhythmic vocals and good old fashioned grooves with twenty-first century lyrics. This is a rare opportunity to experience them live – do not miss it!

Lou and the Llamas: http://www.louarmer.com/
Already dubbed as “Levenshulme’s own super-group”, Lou and the Llamas showcase the songwriting talents of Lou Armer and play a unique blend of idiosyncratic jazz, folk and blues. With a line-up that features ukulele, guitar, double bass and drums as well as Lou’s spellbinding vocals, for the Jamboree they will also be joined by several guest musicians, all found on her hunt for Levy music makers, so expect a few surprises!

Paddy Steer: http://www.myspace.com/paddysteer
Paddy Steer is a Manchester music legend who should need no introduction. King of the leftfield, he’s played with a wide range of music and artists over the years, including his own Homelife and Graham Massey’s Toolshed, be it as a bass player, drummer, Hawaiian slide guitarist or all of these at the same time! Expect synths, electric octave fuzz glockenspiel, electrified drum kit, electric shakers, vocoder, lap steel and bass pedals… Mayhem and calm in an 80/20 ratio.

Little Sparrow: http://www.littlesparrow.org/
Local songbird Little Sparrow AKA Katie Ware plays a mix of acoustic folk with a line-up that includes cello, violin, percussion, guitars and an abundance of harmonies. “She has a singularly beautiful voice, complimented by the delicate vocal and instrumental talents of her fellow musicians. Her growing repertoire of songs, packed with genuine emotion and warmth mark her out as someone very special to listen out for and not under any circumstances to be missed live.”    – Shay Rowan

Call out for Levenshulme Musicians

Following the excitement of the Portas Pilot video, I’ve decided to try and put a band together to do a special version of Ready For Love.

I’m open to all offers of instrumentation – the only proviso is that you must live in Levenshulme.

I’d especially like to hear from a drummer or percussionist and some low end brass (are there any sousaphone players in Lev? There must be a tuba player, surely?) but whatever instrument you play, if you’re up for giving it a go, get in touch!

Next Levy Uke Up – Sunday 29th April

We had a rip-roaring time at the first Levenshulme Uke Up. Thanks to everyone who came along. The good news is, we’re going to to do it all again on Sunday 29th April, 7pm at Pod Deli!

There’s a Facebook event page and we’ve already started work on the next songbook. So if you have any suggestions for songs you’d like to play, get in touch.

Ready for Love ~ free mp3 download!

I was really chuffed to have my song featured in the Levenshulme video entry for the Mary Portas Pilot Fund. So I’ve decided to give it away as a free download, rough and ready as it is.

Levenshulme: Ready for Love

Levenshulme: Ready For Love (Portas Pilot) (by LevenshulmeTownTeam)

Some of the amazing people of Levenshulme, where I live, got together and made this. It’s the only Manchester entry for the Mary Portas Pilot Fund, which aims to rejuvenate struggling high streets.

I’m honoured that they chose one of my songs for the soundtrack. It’s a lovely vid, warms your heart. Well done everyone involved – let’s hope it’s a winner!

Levy Uke Up Songbook

The songbook is ready! This is a collection of songs we shall be playing on Sunday 25th March at Pod Deli. Please print so you can bring it with you on the night.

Download the Levenshulme Uke Up Songbook.

I’ve pilfered the chords from various corners of the internet. Thanks to all the people that share their ukulele resources – I’ve credited the source where possible. If you spot any mistakes, please let me know so I can correct them. There’s a couple of swear words in there – I hope nobody minds!

If you have any song suggestions, make them known so they can be considered for the next time we uke it up.
