Levy Jamboree ~ The Second Coming

We had such a blast at the last Levy Jamboree that we’ve decided to do it all again on Friday 8th February at the Klondyke. If it goes anywhere near as well as the last one, we’re thinking about doing them every few months or so.

It’s a fresh new line-up, apart from t’ Llamas of course but we’ll be doing some brand new songs, and everyone on the bill is still from lovely Levenshulme.

Advance tickets are now on sale for £5 and are available to buy from Trove Foods, from Pod Deli or directly from me. Do buy them in advance if you can as it will be £6 on the door. All the money goes directly to the music makers and everyone who helps to put on the night.

Lou and the Llamas

The original Levenshulme supergroup, playing some brand new songs so don’t expect the same as last time. No, siree!

“Melodic folk/blues with a wry intelligence. Annoyingly catchy songs, too.“ -@essers

“Knee-trembling, witty, heart-warming songs.“ – @wombat37

Monkeys in Love

Original, best & only proponents of Yes Wave, Monkeys in Love could be described as a strange canned-cocktail of forgotten film soundtracks, junk shop glam, lead-footed library funk, early eighties British indie, sludge metal or maybe just a drunken, surly Stereolab.

Monkeys in Love will be filming their set for their forthcoming Owl With Hands video, ahead of their new album Will Pet & Cuddle You, out 28 Feb 2013.

Phil Davies and the ninjasmokebombs

Check out their Bandcamp page and you will find songs taking in cinematic space reggae, laidback funk, jangly guitars, melodic, rhythmic vocals and good old fashioned grooves with twenty-first century lyrics. This is a rare opportunity to experience them live – do not miss it!

Lou and the Llamas at Levenshulme Market

We’ve been hard at work, getting ready for the Levy Jamboree on Friday 9th November. Yesterday we did our first EVER gig at Levenshulme Market! As first gigs go, it wasn’t half bad despite the nerves, wind and cold. Take a look for yourself! (Thanks to Ed Sprake for the videos.)

Lou and the Llamas – Stuck

Lou and the Llamas: http://www.louarmer.com/
Already dubbed as “Levenshulme’s own super-group”, Lou and the Llamas showcase the songwriting talents of Lou Armer and play a unique blend of idiosyncratic jazz, folk and blues. With a line-up that features ukulele, guitar, double bass and drums as well as Lou’s spellbinding vocals, for the Jamboree they will also be joined by several guest musicians, all found on her hunt for Levy music makers, so expect a few surprises!

Paddy Steer: http://www.myspace.com/paddysteer
Paddy Steer is a Manchester music legend who should need no introduction. King of the leftfield, he’s played with a wide range of music and artists over the years, including his own Homelife and Graham Massey’s Toolshed, be it as a bass player, drummer, Hawaiian slide guitarist or all of these at the same time! Expect synths, electric octave fuzz glockenspiel, electrified drum kit, electric shakers, vocoder, lap steel and bass pedals… Mayhem and calm in an 80/20 ratio.

Little Sparrow: http://www.littlesparrow.org/
Local songbird Little Sparrow AKA Katie Ware plays a mix of acoustic folk with a line-up that includes cello, violin, percussion, guitars and an abundance of harmonies. “She has a singularly beautiful voice, complimented by the delicate vocal and instrumental talents of her fellow musicians. Her growing repertoire of songs, packed with genuine emotion and warmth mark her out as someone very special to listen out for and not under any circumstances to be missed live.”    – Shay Rowan

Listen to me on the BBC iPlayer!

If you missed my performance and interview last night on BBC Radio Manchester, you can listen to it right here. My bit starts 8.08 minutes in.

It’s only up for seven days though so be quick!

I haven’t listened to it myself yet so let me know what you think. Thanks to everyone who tuned in and got in touch during and after the show last night.

BBC Radio Manchester ~ tomorrow!

News just in: I will be singing and playing my ukulele on BBC Radio Manchester tomorrow night, just after 10pm. There will be talky bits too!

Tune in on 95.1 FM or listen live via the interwebs.

I’ll let you know if a Listen Again thingy goes up.

Ed Sprake Photography

At the last Levy Uke Up, we were lucky enough to be joined by local photographer Ed Sprake. Ed specialises in photographing music and people, amongst other things and he has a great eye. As some of you know, I get quite self conscious having my picture taken but Ed seems to guage just the right moment to capture people at their natural best without you even knowing he is doing it.

The above shot was taken on a Zorki 4 – Ed has a range of both film and digital cameras to choose from. Check out the full photo set here. You can also read Ed’s blog post about it: Zorki 4 and the Unfocused Ukelele Invasion

There’s also a full colour set of photos from the last Uke Up, which this shot is taken from. If you’ve ever wondered what a Uke Up is like, these photos really bring it to life!

Check out more of Ed’s work on his website, like him on Facebook or follow him on the Twitters.

The Big Fat Stupid Quiz ~ this Tuesday

So, I seem to playing at this on Tuesday. I’d better get practising as it’s not my usual kind of gig..! There is talk of a couple of proper tunes at half time, maybe. And there’s free chips!

(Coming soon: Life After Beantown – The Aftermath + a surprise track that will be up for free download later this week!)

Call out for Levenshulme Musicians

Following the excitement of the Portas Pilot video, I’ve decided to try and put a band together to do a special version of Ready For Love.

I’m open to all offers of instrumentation – the only proviso is that you must live in Levenshulme.

I’d especially like to hear from a drummer or percussionist and some low end brass (are there any sousaphone players in Lev? There must be a tuba player, surely?) but whatever instrument you play, if you’re up for giving it a go, get in touch!
