I am a vocalist, songwriter and musician based in Manchester, England. I play ukulele, guitar and sometimes saxophone and keyboards. I also have a love-hate relationship with technology.
My main band is Lou and the Llamas, known as purveyors of “Knee-trembling, witty, heart-warming songs“. Our sound has been described as “Melodic folk/blues with a wry intelligence. Annoyingly catchy songs, too“. We’ve performed all over the UK and opened the very first GNUF festival. The Wonky EP is available on Bandcamp. We’re on hiatus at the moment but I’m still available for solo work if you ask me nicely.
Previously, I sang and played with Paula Darwish & The Country & Eastern Band, performing songs in Turkish, Kurdish, Arabic and English. With the band I performed all over the UK and toured Turkey twice, including performances on national Turkish TV. Before that, I’ve played in more bands and collaborations than I can remember (maybe I should sit down and try to compile a full list one of these days!).
Recently I have been leading various community music projects for older people, including singing, songwriting and percussion. I currently run a weekly #AgeFriendly choir at Levenshulme Inspire which is funded through MICRA and have also been leading community choir sessions in Pendleton through Salford Arts Theatre. I also deliver ukulele workshops and have done this for the last two years as part of Forsyth’s Learn To Play Day. I work with all ages in both formal and informal settings and have worked in schools across Manchester teaching music technology and delivering a range of music workshops.
In February 2015, I appeared on BBC Radio 4’s You And Yours to talk about ukuleles. I also had the honour of teaching presenter Peter White how to play a tune on the uke! Listen to the full version or the short version.
In 2012 I started Levy Uke Up, a ukulele jam which takes places every second and last Sunday of the month at Fred’s in Levenshulme, Manchester.
From 2010 to 2012, I produced and presented the cult favourite Uke Hunt Podcast for Ukulele Hunt.
In my other life, I have extensive experience working in community media including setting up a community radio station which I then managed for several years.
